Restore of C:\ RRS feed

  • Question

  • Started a restore of C:\  by WHS because computer failed to boot in any mode. Just kept rebooting. Everything went fine with WHS restore instructions.  Estimated time to completion 1 hours and 57 minutes. It has now been at least eight hours. Neither estimated time to completion nor the blue progress bar has moved.  When I hit escape says drives will not be usable. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hello,
you are using the same disk?
Could be well possible, that the disk broke and therefore cannot be accessed.
So you would have to replace the disk first.

You also can try to use the Disk management button in the recovery environment. Try to delete and recreate the partition and format it in NTFS format (not using quick format) to discover potential disk errors. (Deleting the partition sometimes also allows the disk hardware to map damaged sectors out of the visibility of Windows.)

Sometimes also network problems between the recovery environment and WHS cause the restore process run very slow or even stop.
In this case you could use another client computer and go through following steps:
    • detach the disk from the PC you wish to restore
    • attach it to the second PC as a secondary drive (either by connecting to an internal port or with an USB to SATA/IDE connector)
    • boot that PC up
    • restore the disk by running ClientRestoreWizard.exe, which can be found in Program Files\Windows Home Server on the client PC.
Be carefull here with the selection of the target disk to not overwrite the wrong disk with the backup from the PC, which you wish to restore!
    • After completing the restore bring the disk back to the original PC.

    Best greetings from Germany
