victim of software counterfeiting RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've bought a computer with Window ME on it a few years ago didn't like the OS so I went to to PC World which is Major High Street Retailer and bought a legit copy of Windows XP Pro, turned the computer off and when I turned it on now all I get is the following message "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of Windows is not genuine and is not eligible to receive all updates and product support from Microsoft." I've got the original CD media and the Certificate of Authenticity. Why has it done this and more important how do I resove the problem.

    Thanks Dean

  • Lhez,

Right now, your Acer Aspire SA-90 computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 10), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.

If you search the forum, you'll see that two other posters have submitted reports with the same volume licensing key, *****-*****-T23MH-CR247-KT222.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

More bad news:  Your Office Pro 2003 installation is showing as Nongenuine (Office status:  114 means nongenuine).  If this comes as a surprise to you, please go back to where you purchased the installed copy of Office and let them know that it is a counterfeit copy and that you demand a genuine copy or a refund.  Or you can participate in the Genuine Office offer.  In any case, please uninstall the nongenuine installation of Office as soon as possible.  Your installed copies of Front Page, Visio and Project are showing as Genuine at the moment, but be advised that these programs have been installed with Volume Licensing Keys, so if your situation is not appropriate for Volume Licensing, it's only a matter of time before these Keys are Blocked.

It is almost a certainty that your computer shipped from Acer with a properly licensed installation of Windows.  The Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer will describe which edition it came with.  The solution to the problem is as simple as putting that installation of XP back onto the computer.  Please consult Acer tech support documentation for instructions on how to do this.
