Reinstalled, Invalid Product Key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently reinstalled my Dell OptiPlex GX 270 and it now complains that the Product Key is invalid. What is strange is that the Dell supplied reinstallation media did not ask for a product key so I had to change it after installation when the activation window appeared. I selected "telephone a customer service representative etc", and then "change product key".

Anyway, it accpeted the key but then decided not to activate it claiming it is invalid.

Here is the printout from the WGA tool. The Key is definitely purchased and valid, and the certificate of authenticity is on the side of the PC where it has been for the last few years.

Can someone help? Within 30 days if possible... Smile

  • You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4"
(w/o the quotes) in the Start Search box in the Start Menu and pressing
    Enter.
The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes.

  • Iotp,

Did you try and activate Windows by telephone? My previous post I provided a link which will provide the phone number for activation centers. Also Carey provided some information. Below I will provide more information.  Please let us know @ your earliest convience if the system is activated.

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click “Start”, point to” All Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to” System Tools”, and then click “Activate Windows”.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Click “Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement”, click “Back”, and then click “Next”
    4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box and then click “Next”.

Note:  The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

    5. Once activation is completed and you receive the following message, click “OK”.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

More information on how to activate Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890
Also you may reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851 .  Next please proceed in validating the copy of your software by going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  Click “Validate Windows” button.

Please let us know @ your earliest convience if the system is activated.
