Appointments through SMTP in Windows Mobile 6 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Maybe there is a way to do this I'm not seeing.  In WM4 I could create an appointment request and it would send out via my default email account.  Now with WM6 it seems it only functions if you sync with outlook or exchange - you can't send the request email out with your SMTP/POP account.

It was nice being able to do this - first, you don't have to wait until you sync for the appointment requests to go out.  Second, if you don't have an Exchange server or use Outlook on your PC (and I don't) the appointment NEVER goes out.

Why can't we still send out the requests via SMTP/POP?  It was convenient being able to put an appointment in my calendar and send out appointment details to invitees in one step.

  • Although functionality comparison chart doesn't go as far back as WM4, it does make reference, as you've stated in your post in Windows Mobile current versions,  to "Send meeting requests from your smartphone.1
1 Features and functionality compatible with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 only."

If we hear of functionality able to accomplish your request, we'll post it here.

  • I'm confused.

When you make an appointment and invite others, it sends a standard-formatted email to them, which their outlook picks up and turns into an appointment in their calendar.  (Theoretically, other email programs could support this format and negotiate appointments with Outlook users, but that's another topic)

In Windows Mobile 4, the invitation email could be sent on a POP account profile.  In Windows Mobile 6, it will ONLY send out the email using your Exchange account profile - it doesn't ask what account to send the invitation out on.  So, in my case (I don't use Exchange) it won't send out the request until I sync my device with Outlook on my PC.  In Windows Mobile 4, I could send out the meeting request on a wifi access point wherever I am.

So, suppose I am on a trip.  I want to make an appointment with a friend for the day I return:

I pull out my Windows Mobile 4 PDA, make the appointment, and later that day when I connect to a wifi point at a coffeehouse it goes out.  He accepts the appointment, so his email program sends me a standard format "Accept" email.  Later that night at the hotel I connect to wifi and pop my mail, and I get the confirmation.

    -or-

I pull out my Windows Mobile 6 PDA, make the appointment, and the day I get home from my trip I plug the device into my desktop computer to sync.  Only NOW does the appointment request get sent out.  Too late.

  • Thanks MaxSmart,

I will log this as a change request and see what the feedback is.  I'm not sure there will be a quick remedy though.

  • Not to beat a dead horse, but why does Microsoft respond to every "this used to work before WM6 but now it doesn't" thread as if it were a new and novel feature request?

  • I agree with Max, since the appointments notifications are sent via the Outlook email account it is useless for me and I'd bet it is useless for most people that do not sync to an Exchange Server.

I've found a (clunky) workaround for this limitation, but it involves using a third party email application (FlexMail4 ).  If you use FlexMail, the notification will still get sent to the Outlook email account (called ActiveSync email account), but FlexMail allows you to move the email to any other POP3 account you've got set up on the device.

  • Hey Max,

I don't view your request as a "novel feature request".  If this use to work, and for what ever reason that functionality was changed - we need to know provide this feedback so that adding that functionality back can be investigated.  Just trying to make sure that your voice is heard - should have provided more details to you.

Thanks Julie for your 3rd party email app suggestion.

  • has there been a fix or solution to this yet?  i just got WM 6.5 and tried sending a meeting invite but it doesnt send anything out unless if i sync it with outlook on my PC.  Even then it doesnt send it out automatically.  i have to open the meeting and manually send it out.

it would be nice if the meeting invite can be sent directly from my WM 6.5.

  • I wouldn't hold my breath for them to release a patch to fix it.  My WM6 device is nearing its end-of-life, and they still haven't fixed a single bug/issue with that.

Now I'm waiting for WM7 mobile to come out, I'm going to check it out, and if it fixes all the concerns, I'll buy a WM7 device.  Otherwise I'm going to bite the bullet and throw out all my purchased Windows Mobile software accessories and go with another platform.

I'm in no hurry because I'm waiting for the government to step in and stop the (illegal) tying practices the cell phone companies are all engaged in.  Right now, I don't see the point of a powerful platform like Windows Mobile that can handle wifi connectivity, POP3, syncing, locally-loaded software, file storage, etc - when all the phone companies force you to purchase a data plan if you want to use such a phone on their network.  The main benefit of such technologies is that they operate well with an intermittent Internet connection.

If Microsoft wants to win us back, they need to fix their product to work at least as well as version 4.0; and if they would go to bat for the free-wifi movement, it wouldn't hurt my perceptions of them either :)
