  • Hello STEVIE4U

    The error:

"The software licensing service has determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not clean installations."

is pretty straightforward.  It means that the Product Key being used is an Upgrade Product Key.  An Upgrade Product Key can only be used in Windows that have been install using the Upgrade method.

You can get more information regarding the rpoper way to install an upgrade version of Vista in the "Install, Upgrade and Activate" section of the Windows Vista Answers Forum (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista), but my understanding is that there are two method you can use to install Windows.

    a) Boot from the DVD and install from there (Full install)

    b) Boot into the older version of Windows (the one to be upgraded), put the upgrade dvd in the disk drive and then start the install from there (Upgrade Install)

My assumption is that you installed using method a) above and that is why you are getting that error message.

    Thank you,

  • I also have the same problem and I have wiped my hard drive and re-installed from the rescue disk with the Windows 7 home Premium  X64 edition because I thought that I had not activated it properly. When I re-installed it I ensured that I activated this product before installing the professional X64 upgrade that I purchased. Once I had re-installed the upgrade I then acitivated this too (and it said that it was successful). I am now being asked to activate it again and it will no accept the original code or the upgrade one and just gives me this error code when I use the upgrade key. The home premium edition key is simply not recognised with no error code.

So, yes they have both been activated correctly.

No, the problem has not gone away.

I have already contacted Tech support and they point me to these forums...fat lot of good they are!

I am looking for some divine intervention before this computer goes through the window (7).

    Frustrated.

    Steve
