The redirector failed to determine the connection type RRS feed

  • Question

  • In Event Viewer- System I see lots of the following warnings of source MrxSmb - "The redirector failed to determine the connection type".  According to the kb here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315244 "This behavior can occur when NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) attempts to query the destination device (in this case, the loopback adapter) for network speed. The loopback adapter does not handle speed negotiation and therefore cannot negotiate the speed."

According to MS I can safely ignore this message.  Given that I am having other issues I wonder if that is not the case?  Anyone have any insite and/or do you see this on your WHS box?

  • Yes, but only when logged on to the server via Remote Desktop, and making a connection to a network share. For example, clicking on the server's desktop shortcut to the WHS shared folders and then opening one of the folders.

  • To clarify - I am RDPing into my WHS box from another PC on my LAN and using the desktop shortcut for Shared Folders.  So you are saying not to worry about this?

  • That's correct. According the the MSKB article that you referenced, this error message is normal when you query the loopback adapter on a PC, and that's what happens when you click on the desktop shortcut for shared folders - the LAN request is routed to the loopback adapter.

  • Thanks - I was able to duplicate these warnings and they do occur in the Event Viewer as I browse folders in the Share space via RDP.  Thanks for the info.
