Windows is eating up hard drive space daily - How to free up space? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi.  Recently my computer was slowing down and I realized that there was only 4GB of hard space left from a 55GB hard drive.  I can understand if I was installing and downloading massive files but I haven't downloaded anything really for a long time when I had 40GB of FREE space.  I ran a space checker and found out that Windows has takine about 42GB of my hard drive.  Every day windows is updating my computer (I have XP) and at the current rate I will run out of space in about two weeks.  I can't get it to stop.  I even delete programs and instead of freeing up space I lose more space.

What can I delete in windows?  I see directories such as: $NtUninstallKb926239$, downloadedinstallations, CAVtemp, ie7updates, ie8updates, shellnew, srchasst, softwaredistribution etc.  The directories go on and on.  How can I stop my hard drive shrinking to nothing?
