I cannot download Media player, because of an invalid version of windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

When i started Windows Media Player, i got a message that a new version of Windows Media Player was available. I clicked a button so it would download a new version. But halfway in the progress, I realised I already did it once, but couldn't install it, because of an invalid version of Windows. So I clicked the close button halfway in the progress, but now it doesn't work anymore. And i can't download a new one, because of the invalid version.

Now, I never had this sort of problems before, and it is the same version of windows as it was installed on this computer when i bought it. I never saw i had an invalid version.

I browsed the forum, and saw other people with the same problems. Some suggested to run a certain program, and then copy the result into this page. So here it is:

Right now, your Medion computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 8), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

More bad news:  Your Office 2003 Pro installation is showing as Nongenuine (Office status=114 means nongenuine).  If this comes as a surprise to you, please go back to where you purchased the installed copy of Office and let them know that it is a counterfeit copy and that you demand the genuine copy that you paid for, or a refund.  In any case, please uninstall the nongenuine installation of Office 2003 as soon as possible.

Look on the computer or in the materials that came with your computer to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or for another verison of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?  We would expect yours to read "Medion."

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

  • Well, there's a little story about this computer:

We bought it in Germany. Then, back in Holland, at my father's work they installed a Dutch version of Windows, because it came with a German version. (read: if there is a COA, it's not in my home).

Could this be the cause for the problems?

And I never heard or read about non-legimate versions of windows. Is this something from the last few years, I never had those messages on my computer before.

    Thanks

  • Alfa159,

If the computer has a Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the case, then the computer came from its manufacturer (Medion) with XP preinstalled and it is still licensed to run that exact edition of XP, most likely XP Home.

You could always solve your nongenuine problem by putting the original installation of XP back onto the computer, but it would seem that is not a full solution due to the language of the orgiginal installation not being the prefered language.

IMO your best option is to participate in the Genuine Windows Offer and to purchase a WGA Kit for XP Pro in your desired local language, by following the Get Genuine prompts on the computer.  You will be emailed a genuine XP Pro retail Product Key which can be used immediately along with the Key Updater utility to "genuine-ize" the current nongenuine installation of XP Pro, which is in your desired language.  Shortly thereafter you will receive a genuine retail XP Pro CDROM in the mail, in your prefered language.  The WGA Kit is usually sold at a significant discount as compare to the normal retail selling price for a full retail license.  Here in the USA the WGA Kit is 50% less than the normal retail price---not sure how big of a discount is offered to residents of The Netherlands.
