Sloooooowww USB 2.0 Transfers RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I just upgraded my primary drive (WD 80 GB 7200 PATA) to a larger drive (WD Caviar GP 500 GB SATA) and did also did a fresh install to upgrade from RC1 to RTM. I copied everything off the server onto two 320 gb external usb 2.0 drives I had. Everything went fine except that now that I am trying to transfer my data back onto the server it is taking FOREVER to move the files. The system also gets really slow, neither of which happened when I was moving the data off.

I'm not sure if it is a result of the new drive or what but from what I read, there shouldn't be this much of a performance drop from the 7200 to the green power drive. My server has four other PATA drives installed to the pool. I've also heard that USB is processor intensive, so I've tried connecting to a seperate usb controller, transferring to shares from another computer over gigabit lan, all to no avail. Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Other specs: abit it7-max 2.0, Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 1.5 ghz pc2700
