An unauthorized change was made to Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have the same message everyone else has.

    Blank screen on startup.

I tried to get the diagnostic report through the process that is given in the forums, but it says that my diagnostic report is not working.

I also tried deleting KB933928, but that didn't work either.

Please help, 3 month old Gateway bought from best buy with windows vista.

  • Hi Duddi175,

Because of the issues you are seeing with the Diagnostic Report tool (which is a simple reporting program that makes no changes to your system) returning a "...Has stopped working" error as well as, more importantly, the "Windows is not working proerly" error you get in safe mode. It sounds like Vista showing as Non-Genuine is just a symptom of a larger Vista issue.  I would suggest reinstalling Vista.

All computers built by Gateway (as well as other companies such as Dell, HP and so on) that come with Vista pre-installed also come with a Windows Restore process. This process restores Vista back to how it was when it left the factory (kind of like a re-install).

I highly recommend doing a Windows Restore. (each company implements the Windows Restore process differently, so please see the documentation that came with the computer or contact Gateway for assistance in starting the process).

Lastly, because of the error message "An unauthorized change was made to Windows..." I believe that at least part of the issue may have been caused by a program that was incompatible with Vista. So once you have Vista restored reinstalled, I highly recommend that you not install any program untill you have confirmed that you have the Most Up To Date version of that program and also confirmed that the Most Up to Date version is, in fact, compatible with Vista.

    Thank you,

  • I don't think that is what I need. I don't see any of those errors on my screen. Is there another way to get a diagnostic report? Any thing else I can try?

I am unsure what you mean by this. To get a Diagnostic Report download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue" click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste (Shortcut keys: ctrl + v) the report into a response message in this thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:

    1) Login to Vista and Click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.

    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.

    3) A window will come up asking if you want to Run or Save, Select Run

    4) When the program runs, Click the Continue button, then click the Copy button.

    5) Return to this thread by Typing: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3046812&SiteID=25 into the browser address bar.

    6) In a reply post, Paste the Diagnostic Report.

Alternatively, you can create a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 for Validation and Activation support.

  • Hi Darin,

I click on that link and when I hit Run a box comes up saying "Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool has Stopped Working".

I don't even know what to ask at the support link you gave. I bought the computer from best buy 3 months ago and know it says that vista is not Genuine.

    Please help.

  • In addition to the above. I started up in safe mode and was going to uninstall "appwiz.cpl" but before I can even type it in the search tab a box comes up and says Windows is not working properly and will not let me continue.

I also tried a System Restore but my earliest restore point is only 3 days ago. I tried that but it did not work.

  • Yeah, I did a reinstall last night. I think you are right, I installed a game that was not compatible with Windows Vista. I'm guessing that was the problem.

I reinstalled using the feature that saved prior data to a c/backup folder.

Question is what is the best way to get the data back easily and safely (like music files, pics, etc.)

  • Re: An Unauthorized Change was Made to Windows

Can't seem to figure how this happened. This is a 5 year old machine, running well then all of the sudden the Unauthorized Change to Windows comes up. Avast doesn't think anything is wrong but can't send normal email or print.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Best,

    Jeff Wood

  • It would be best to post your diagnostic in a new thread of your own making rather than resurrect a thread that is over 5 years old.
