  • Dear Stochastic,

Thank you for your interest in the Buy Local program. It appears that you are not eligible as you are running a version of Windows that is licensed to OEMs, as indicated on your diagnostic report:

    Windows License Type: OEM SLP

Upon further investigation it appears that your machine running a Hewlett-Packard OEM version of Windows.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

    Thank you,

    Jenifer

  • Fry's is not a local PC builder...they are a retailer.

How can I tell if the copy of Microsoft Windows that was installed on my computer is eligible for the BONUS PACK offer?: http://www.localpcbuilder.com/eligible/

  • Hello Jenifer,

I understand that the windows license type is OEM SLP, and therefore not eligible.  However, I feel that I have been taken advantage of in purchasing this computer.  In good faith I used the “Find a Local PC Builder” and Fry’s store locations as well as their online store are listed.  This promotion was a major impetus for this purchase and most importantly the timing.  This promotion provided enough critical mass for me to purchase.  If computers from Fry’s are not eligible because they are a reseller, then they should be removed from the list.  Is there a way that one could check eligibility prior to purchasing?  This information should be provided.  I can provide documentation that this was purchased at Fry's if needed.

If I were aware this purchase would not be eligible, I would not have made the purchase.  The purchase of a new computer would have been in either 4Q 2007 or 1Q 2008.  The operating system would not have been any form of Windows operating systems!  Several versions of Linux and UNIX operating systems would have been used for application development.  The perks offered in this promotion provided the motivation for me to seriously consider developing applications for Windows Vista operating systems.

This experience has left an extremely negative opinion of Microsoft.  I will be very wary of all Microsoft promotions in the future as my first was this one.  I now have a machine that included a premium for the Microsoft software that is of no use to me.  Unfortunately, I am unable to return this purchase.  As a small business owner trying to succeed I feel abused by Microsoft.  Thank you very much for a hard learned lesson!  Don’t believe or trust Microsoft!

    Regards,

    Stochastic

    Hello Carey,

Thanks for your input.  Unfortunately, when shopping online the operating system is listed as "Vista ..." and part numbers are not provided.  Also, the list of Local PC Builders has a fair number of retailers like tigerdirect, fry's, and cdw.  Also when checking others, for example MicroCenter, they have systems that are a local build as well as brand name machines.  It is very frustrating!

    Thanks for your input!

    Cheers,

    Stochastic

  • Dear Stochastic,

This particular promotion, the Buy Local promotion, was designed to give local PC builders an incentive they can provide to their customers. Large OEMs such as Dell, HP and Toshiba, and large retailers such as Fry's, Best Buy, and Circuit City often have these incentive programs for their own PCs to reward purchase. Unfortunately, local PC builders often don't have the marketing clout to go and negotiate their own incentives. Many are small shops with a handful of employees who serve local markets. Our objective was to provide marketing support and assistance to this very important channel. To do this we have worked very closely with the local PC builders and with the offer providers to put together an incentive program that rewards their customers for purchases and makes them more comparable with the big OEMs.

We've done our best to convey the nature of this promotion and its applicability. The model is similar not just to OEMs and big-box consumer electronics stores offering incentives but really to any retailer. If you feel there's a place we can be more explicit please let us know and we will try and address it. The eligibility criteria is available at www.localpcbuilder.com/eligible.

Fry's is not a participating reseller, but it is possible that you have purchased a version on the "eligible parts" list. If that is the case, please create a support incident at https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 and post the incident number here so I can contact you directly.

    Best regards,

    Jenifer
