Windows 7 RC questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a burn of the Windows 7 release candidate (build 7100 if memory serves) from a few weeks ago that I never installed; I was waiting until I could get the new hardware referred to in my thread from yesterday. Now I am interested in installing it, but I have just learned that in the interim it has been removed from your Web site. Is it still permissible to install the RC, and if so, will I have any difficulties activating it?

Also, on a related note, a classmate expressed an interest in trying it out. However, there is (as far as I know) no above-board way of downloading it. Would it be possible for him to get an activation code from your Web site, and use my copy of the actual software? Or is the code somehow tied to the specific download?

  • Hello Jeff Heikkinen,

Win7 RC product keys will be available for free download at the site below until October 21, 2009.  Burn a new DVD for your classmate, or your classmate can use the same DVD that you have, and just tell your classmate to visit the site below to get his or her own product key.

Actually, the first sentence in the main text of that page is "Sorry, the Windows 7 RC is no longer available for download.". Really. Feel free to check it yourself.

It does, however, go on to answer the question I actually asked, in the next sentence. So both of us fail at reading comprehension :-P.

  • Actually, when I try to get a code from that site, I get:

    500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

EDIT: This seems to now be resolved, I got a code when I tried again a few hours after the above post.
