WHS Licensing and Hardware RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using my own custom build for WHS. I know that a license is tied to hardware, but I also know that Microsoft leaves some room for hardware upgrades. I was wondering if anyone could point me to resources that detail the relationship between WHS licenses and hardware.

    Thanks in advance.

The OEM license is tied to the motherboard (the rest is upgradable).  You are allowed to replace the motherboard if it fails with the same model (or manufacturer's equivalent).  Replacing the motherboard for any other reason is against the OEM agreement.  Having said that, MS has let other users in the past activate their license a second time for just that reason.  You can download the MS Licensing document from here.
