  • Hi Peter.Bosch,

It may be that Vista's Licensing Store is corrupt or malformed in some way. I would like you to try the below set of steps.  The first set will attempt to reset the Store and the second set will recreate it.  Try the first set and if that doesn't work, move on to the next.

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot twice

    1) Return to the cmd windows
    2) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    6) Type: net start slsvc
    7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    8) Reboot Twice
    9) You may be required to enter the Product Key again and then Activate

Please post if this resolves the issue or not,
    Darin MS

  • Hi, "Darin Smith MS " :-)

The second set of actions worked.

Afterward, tokens.bar was 21,514 bytes and tokens.dat was 3,356,020 bytes.

    Thank you, and regards,

    Pete.Bosch

  • Hello,

I have the same problem after an windows vista update yesterday (had the pc for over a year now..with plenty of working updates. The first step went fine but had no effect. The second step however won't work because after step 2 it denies me access. I get the error: system fault 5

Please don't mind this at the moment. Forgot to open Cmd.exe as admin... I'll try it again

im trying stage two now..just tried finished step 2 on this page: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/624baae5-0404-4255-9887-2f99f6fe0677
it said that there were files with errors but that they couldnt be fixed...

  • Hello D.M.A,

I believe you have a different issue.  Vista being in a Non-Genuine state almost always looks the same, regardless of what is causing the Non-Genuine state. This is why we request that each user create their own thread and post their Diagnostic Report.  To fix the issue we have to fix the Cause and since almost all non-Genuine issue look alike, we need a Diagnostic Report to know what the Cause is.

If you are still experiencing a Non-Genuine issue, please create your own thread and post a Diagnostic Report.  You can learn how to generate a Diagnostic Report from the "Please Read Before Posting" announcement on the main page of this forum.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Whenever I try to do step 2 of either set, I can't get the cmd file. It just gets me back to a google search page. Do I have the same problem or is it another problem?
I did the diagnostic report and I did see that the license of the validation status was an invalid license.
