Password incorrect, while it is not. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I bought a Home server since it was appraised as a typical home-use product. There is one bug that keeps me from using it up until today:

    - when logging in in the console from a client PC, the console tells me the password is incorrect.

It is not however. I even copy-pasted it, changed it on the server itself then re-entered it on the client pc.
I've seen some solutions, but they won't fix the problem.

    -----
    Run secpol.msc
Drill down through Local Policies | Security Options.
Find Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level.
Set this Send NTLM response only.
-----> this was already set the right way, in my case.

There was also a solution that had to to do with setting permissions, but I don't seem to have permissions tabs when I click on folders>properties. Might be because I run XP Home edition?

I am hoping that there is a simple, straightforward solution, just as the product WHS itself claimed to be.
Any suggestions? Please bear in mind I am a user, not a tweaker, simple language would be appreciated.

    Tnx a lot,
    Nils

  • Could be an issue with your video driver. Please try solution 3 from this FAQ (or one of the other two solutions).

If this doesn't fix it you could also try:

On the client machine please go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys and see that the folder and ALL FILES in it have Full permissions for the Administrators GROUP and SYSTEM account. (based on post of nigelbb in this thread

or (if the machine has been previously connected to another server with the same name as your WHS):

On the client computer giving you the headaches launch the following from your Start > Run menu: rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr. Then find the name of your WHS, highlight it and "Remove it". Logoff, then back in, and update your password one final time through the WHS client. (from post of dmxrob in this thread)

  • Olaf and Brubber,

thank you SO much. It indeed was a video driver issue.
You won't believe all the tings I've tried to make me enter the console.

It turned out my OEM (!) product had an Nvidia card. Uninstalling the Nvidia driver on the server itself was all I had to do, following just step one in this FAQ .

    Thanks again!
    Nils
