Cut/Copy on server very slow. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having trouble copying files from the home server.  When I try to copy files from the home server explorer keeps crashing for Vista.  This is not a Vista issue.  What I did was go to the Home Server computer and log in as administrator.  I tried to cut/copy a file and when I try the explorer freezes for a good minute.  It does copy to memory.  Pasting works without any trouble after this.

What could be causing this?  Could there be a corruption in the clipboard or indexing?

  • I figured out the problem.  There was  a bad CD in the computer.  I took out the bad CD and voila I could easily copy/paste items again on the network share.

  • One other thing I just noticed.  When I am logged into the server and right click on any file it takes a very long time for the right click menu to open up.  About the same time it takes to do the original cut/copy.

  • Hi,
you may take a look into the event log of the server (in Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools on the server desktop), if there are errors and warnings showing up.
Did you install any 3rd party software on the server? Or map any persistent network ressources to the server desktop directly (what is not supported), which are no longer exist?

  • Hi,
indeed a bad CD or a drive which cannot read inserted CDs/DVDs properly slows down the Windows Explorer in the same manner as unreachable network drives.
