Can I find out before opening up the package if my system builder kit is legit? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have one of those 3 packs for vista basic..when i told the shop owner that  i refurbish computers for charities he sold me this.. which is good as i needed a copy to install for myself, mostly..

I'vr heard horror stories about these things being sold after having been reported stolen or returned for disposal though.. and the shop seemed a bit shady.. can I double check the number on the box to see if it's been reported or otherwise blocked?

    Thank you...

Well, it seemed to work fine this time.. i wonder if it might have been because I ran it from a FAT32 formatted disc the first time..
    Here it is..
     Holding my breath..... ;-)

    Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0):

You need to activate by phone - BE AWARE that it's not recommended to use OEM licenses on Apple machine, as the license is tied to the first machine on which the license is installed and activated - you will therefore need a separate license if you decide to use Parallels rather than BootCamp (or vice-versa)

    It looks OK to me.

The only person that posts on here that can check a Product Key before it is activated is Darin.  If he thinks he can check the number he will post back.  Under no circumstances put the full Product Key in any post.  Darin will tell you how much to post if he can check anything.

IIRC you should receive three product key stickers with an individual different key with a system builder 3 pack.  One to be included (physically applied to) with each computer that the product is installed onto.  If this isn't what you got, you may be correct about a shady store.  If I am not accurate, Noel, Dan or Darin will correct my post.

  • OK thanks..i did open it up, as i deduced it unlikely he would be amenable to a refund if he were shady..

I may have been mistaken about the 3pak ..although it does indeed say 3pk on the front but I suspect that it would have had three independent discs, not just 3 stickers..and it may have been parted out.

    I received  1 disc, 1 sticker, i book....

The fact that I refurbish computers for charities only came up in conversation..  i was saying i needed the least expensive copy of windows he had, as it is becoming clear it os costing me more than I can afford to do this ,and making sure a legal copy of windows is installed on  each, on my own dime..i mean i'm on a disability pension too....

As it happened he had this. and i needed a copy for sure

If there is an issue with it, what is likely to happen.?. Will it install OK and I won't find out until I try to activate? or..?

i asume that the OS stays with the comp, permanently, in any case..correct?

    Thank you very much.

Correct about the last. An OEM product is always tied to the first computer (read motherboard) it is installed onto.

I also believe you are correct in getting 3 of everything.  If you look at this Amazon.com web site, while it doesn't explain what you should receive you can get an idea of the price for a valid version of the 3 pack. ($403.90)

  • To be honest, I do not know what is included in an OEM 3-pack (3 of everything or just 3 keys and 1 of everything else) but if you would like me to check the Product Keys, you would first need to install it on a computer (using one of the keys) and then run a Diagnostic Report. then after, you can change to the next key and run another diagnostic report and so on.

(NOTE: you do not need to Activate the key to be able to run a Diagnostic Report. An OEM key is tied to the first PC it is activated on, so don't Activate the key and tie it to that PC, just to see if the key is good)

To generate a Diagnostic Report, download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 . Click "Continue" (ignore any error you may get), click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

    Thank you,

  • sorry to not get back sooner.. seems that it needs a 64bit version of MGAdiag. (im running 64 bit). i don't think windows compatibilty is gonna be much help there.. (isn't there a 32bit subsystem that can run stuff like this, or is it because of it's hardware access that it cant run in a VM?)..

Is there a 64 bit version? i think my three days is gittin short...;-) i may just lock this one in and activate.. after all if it's OK i dont intend to uninstall it anyways..

But not yet.. always cautious if my nose detects something off....

    Thanks

The version of MGAdiagnostics that is online at the link posted by Darin will run on any Windows version from XP onward (32 or 64 bit.)  If you are having any problems running it let us know of any error messges.

You are very right to be concerned about too-good-to-be-true deals - most of them will result in a failed validation at some point, meaning lost time and money. It does appear, though, as if you may have got lucky in this instance!

Hope all continues to go well.....
