Backup of internal and external hard drives RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using a laptop as my primary computer and travelling with the same laptop raises concerns about the security of financial and other personal data stored on the internal drive of the laptop.  Using Windows Live OneCare, is it possible to create a backup plan which backs up both the internal hard drive of the laptop and an external drive (#1) to a second external drive (#2)?  Or, is it possible to create two backup plans: (1) which backs up the files on the internal hard drive only, and (2) which backs up external hard drive #1 only.  My objective is to store financial and other personal data (which I don't need when travelling) on hard drive #1 and still be able to backup such data as desired.

  • OneCare can backup data from the internal disk to an external disk, CD or DVD, or network Share. It can't backup any data from an external disk. There also can be only one backup plan for a PC, but that is a moot point with the inability to specify an external disk as a source location.

  • This answered my question--at least in part--before I asked it.  However, since I cannot back up an external drive through One Care (though one wonders why such a decision was made by the programmers) I need to know how to turn the backup feature OFF so the program will stop bugging me about it.

I am surely not the only person who works off an external drive as my primary drive because I need to be able to use both my laptop and desktop interchangeably.  I manually backup files from my external drive to each of my internal drives (that is: C: on the desktop and C: on the laptop).  Basically, it looks like One Care cannot do what I need it to do in this case.

May I suggest that in future releases an attempt be made to allow the user to make this choice?

  • You can actually do this by creating a network Share on each computer and then pointing backup to the Share on the other computer.

If you wish to turn off backup, open OneCare.

    Change Settings

    backup tab

click change settings in the lower left

make sure that the centralized backup options are unchecked if shown

click on your PC name on the left panel

uncheck turn on backup on this PC

    click next and save.

If you believe that this problem began with the installation of OneCare, please contact OneCare support -
