WHS Backup Service will not run. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I have a EX470 MediaSmart server and just recently within the last couple of days my server has been saying the computer backup service is not running. I have tried the following steps.

    1. Rebooted
    2. I Tried manually restarting the service, I receive an error saying it started then stopped.
    3. Followed the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339 none of which worked, I believe I lost all of my PC backups after this. It tells me the backup service has been successfully started but when I check it, it remains off.
    4. I have ran CHKDSK on all three disks in the system and it has returned with no errors.
    5. I have uninstalled the last three most recent windows updates hoping that they were not the cause.
    6. Event viewer shows the following messages:

    Windows Home Server Log:

    Assertion failure at d:\wssg_src\whs_pp1\qhs\src\storage\qsm\qsm.cxx(18621): pVolRunner->vdf.nDisks > 0

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

    Application Log:

    EventType clr20r3, P1 demigrator.exe, P2 6.0.0.0, P3 48791331, P4 decore, P5 6.0.0.0, P6 490b1fbe, P7 1a9, P8 c, P9 system.io.filenotfoundexception, P10 NIL.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

Do you have any add-ins installed?

    Thank you

  • Yes I have installed serveral addins, but nothing new for several months. Trying to troubleshoot this problem last night I uninstalled everything with the exception of these addins.

The reason I ask is because some of these add-ins rely on MS or Windows Server 2003 updates. These may or may not be causing problems with the backup database.

It might be a good idea to submit a bug to Connect so that the developers can have a look.

Please be sure to list all add-ins installed when you submit the bug. Also, please submit client and server CABs.

  • I have also noticed another issue with this problem. The server storage screen shows all three drives as Healthy, however it's stuck at calculating sizes forever.

I have submitted a connect ticket, it is number 420815

  • Chellis,

Can you follow the instructions Lara posted above and open a bug to the product team? We'll be able to better investiage this issue with the server logs.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

We have a server CAB. Would it be possible for you to submit a client side CAB as well?

    Thanks!

  • Okay I'm not getting very much help on this issue, should I try a repair of the OS somehow? or do you think I need to start over from scratch?

  • Hello, I'm getting the exact same issue.
I have no add-in installed on the home server.

    Thanks for your ideas.

    Hi,

If you've followed the steps in the KB here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339 and you still cannot get the service running, please submit a bug on Connect. We will also need client and server CABs to troubleshoot the problem.

    Thanks!
