Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition 2002 Validation Failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to update my Office XP Small Business Edition.  I had this problem in June, had to uninstall and reinstall Office to update.  I had the problem again today, uninstalled Office, reinstalled it, updated my installation, then tried to install Office Sounds and one other add-in, but Office XP wouldn't pass validation.  When I run the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool, it tells me my version of Office is not activated.  It tells me it is genuine, but not activated.  If I click on "activate this product" in any program, it tells me the product is already activated.  This version of Office XP Small Business Edition came with my Dell computer.  I uninstalled it from the Dell, installed Office XP Pro on the Dell machine (which my wife uses), and installed the Small Business Edition on my "work-in-progress" computer which I continuously rebuild from spare parts.  I can't get it to pass validation.  Can someone help?  I tried to simply delete the notifications on each of the Office programs which say "Activate Product", and tried again (as suggested in another thread), but that didn't work.  Now I'm looking for a cure to my activation and validation woes.  Not just a work-around, but a cure.  Can anyone help?  Here's the copy of the Diagnostic Tool:

  • Hi Burnie,

Can you try the following steps for me?  Please make sure you have your product key (for Office) available.

    1) Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
    2) Delete the data.dat file.
    3) This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA).
    4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word (or your own personal favorite) and ACTIVATE it.
    5) After product activation is successful, let’s try revalidating (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):

Please let us know how things go!!

    Thanks,

  • The problem is the Dell OEM version of Microsoft Office XP Small Business edition is licensed only for the Dell computer it originally came with.  The license cannot be used or transferred to a non-Dell computer since it checks for the presence of a Dell motherboard BIOS.  If the proper Dell BIOS is not found during the activation process, product activation will fail.

There is no workaround for this restriction.
