Product Key on Laptop worn away, missing final 5 characters!! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've just had to re-install Vista on my laptop and it's asking for my Product Key. Before I started I knew the key had more or less worn away on the bottom.  I Googled tools to recover my key from the laptop and I got a working key but not a valid key. The key which was originally used by the manufacturer is not the key on the bottom of the laptop. Vista wants to Activate but it won't let me!

I can make out the first 3 groups of characters perfectly, the 4th group I am pretty certain I've got correct but the 5th is almost completely worn away. I've scanned the bottom of my laptop and used photoshop to try and enhance it but at best I can make out maybe a K at the end.

Is there anything I can do to recover they key - somehow - anyhow!? lol

  • Hello scriminjer,

If you are unable to read the Product key from the COA Sticker, the only thing I can do is direct you to the support doc:

KB811224 "How to identify, locate, and replace a product keyhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/811224

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
