  • Question

  • I have been having problems with my computer for a few weeks now.  It started when one day I turned it on and it would do the whole start up but when it went to the sign on page it was just black but you could still see the mouse.  I was able to get past this and log into my computer by doing f8 when starting up and selecting the disable driver signature enforcement option.  That is annoying to have to do every time and it keeps making me install updates everytime before I log on and then it shuts down and then it reverts to the old setting because it says that the updates were wrong or something.  Anyway, so now its telling me that my version of windows is not genuine even thought I've had it for over a year and have never had a problem before.  I used the MGA Diagnostic tool and this is what I got

  • Hello candycane02m,

Not to alarm you, but between your description, of what's been happening, and the Diagnostic Report, it appears your Vista has suffered some (likely serious) system file corruption.

In your Diagnostic Report, you will notice a long list of files shown as "File Misatch".  Each of Vista's system files have a Signature Hash (think fingerprint) and if the file is modified in any way, the Signature Hash is changed.  Now, Vista has a Database (called the System Catalog) of the correct Signature Hashs for all it's system files. Vista compares the signature hash of the system file with the recorded signature hash listed in the System Catalog. If they don't match, it's called a File Mismatch.

Normally, when I see a list of File Mismatchs longer then 2 or 3, it usually means the System Catalog, itself, had become corrupt, but in your case, I m not so sure because in your Diagnostic Report, I see the error 0x80070426. This means Vista Software Licensing Service has stopped. Normally this is a different issue from File Mismatches, but if the system file, that controls the Software Licensing Service, has been corrupted, the sevice would not be able to run.

This file corruption scenario makes even more sense given that your Vista keeps wanting to install updates (if files are corrupt, Vista wouldn't reconize them and would want to reinstall them) The updates failing to install also makes sense if the files used to install the updates, were corrupt.

As to how/why this file corruption coccured, I can't tell you for sure. It could be caused by random corruption, Hard Drive going bad, Virus infection or something else I'm unaware of.

How do you fix the issue?:

To be honest, my only suggestion would be to reinstall Vista.

I do NOT like telling people to reinstall and only suggest it as a last resort. But for your issue, I believe we are at that Last Resort point.

Note: you are are resistant to reinstalling Vista, you may want to contact Vista support (at http://support.microsoft.com) and see if they possibly have a fix for the issue that doesn't involve reinstallation

Your computer would have come with either a Windows Restore disk or a hidden partition on the hard drive that contains the Windows Restore program. Refer to the documentation, that came with your computer, (or contact the computer's manufacturer) for instuctions on how to conduct the windows restore process.

(since you have partal access to the computer, you should be able to offload all your importent files before reinstalling)
