    So it looks like M-soft is going to screw us again and take away our ability to use O Express soon.  Does anyone know if we can still use regular Outlook with their MSN service for email?

    And how is ending support for an old protocol for a free email account "screwing" anyone?

     

    You have several choice:

    1. Download and install Windows Live Mail (assuming your OS is supported) from http://get.live.com and have full access to your Hotmail accounts in the update to OE.

    2. If you are using Outlook 2003 or 2007, download and install the Outlook Connector software, which will support Hotmail account sync - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7AAD7E6A-931E-438A-950C-5E9EA66322D4&displaylang=en

    3. Upgrade your free Hotmail account to a paid Hotmail Plus account - http://get.live.com/mailplus/features and access it via OE or the email client of your choice using POP/SMTP access

    There doesn't seem to be a topic related to my issue.

     

    First of all, my MSN email account is not free -- I pay for the service.  Second, like a lot of people, I've gotten quite comfortable using O Express for my email.  I think forcing people to switch is, almost by definition, screwing us.  Anyway, does the fact that I have a Hotmail Plus account mean I won't have to switch after all?  So, Microsoft isn't supporting O Express anymore -- unless you pay for it?  Also, when I look at the account properties, it doesn't appear that I'm using a Pop server for access.  I think it's an HTTP server.  Does that make any sense?

    Hi Artie.

    Yes, it makes sense.

    You will need to change the account properties in Outlook Express to a POP account when WebDav support is ended. You are currently using WebDav in OE to access Hotmail via http. That method is supposed to stop working on 6/30/08. Since you have a paid account, you can continue to use OE, but the settings need to be changed to POP.

    There are some details that might need tweaking, if your ISP blocks communications over port 25 for SMTP to any email server other than their own, but you can receive mail via POP for a paid Hotmail account now. The blog post I referred you to above has details.
