restoring 1 care backup from an external hard drive

Question
-
1 care did 3 backups on it and in the backup folder was a couple of 1 kb pieces maybe 5 and than 547 zipped files about 50 mg each. 1 care will not let me put in the path for my free agent external hard drive even though it is configured to backup on that external which it did . It will only let me use the dvd/dr so I transferred some to a dvd/r and than again
on a dvd/rw and nothing works "_It just kept popping up a grey window with ok on it and it said that network share name is invalid please check share name or try again"_please help. My son hit system restore and wiped out ALL of my files on the hard drive and it came back on as I had originally bought it 2 yrs ago and a free 9o day trial of norton. I am using windows xp media center service pack 2.....PLEASE HELP I NEED THESE FILES.
thank you

I'm not sure what your situation is. It sounds like you are attempting to restore files following a complete restore to the factory default condition of the PC (note that this is not system restore, which does not affect data files).
You mentioned that Norton came preinstalled on the PC. You need to make sure that it is completely removed. I suggest running the Norton removal tool -ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
Once Norton is completely gone and OneCare is confirmed to be working, you can try the restore. If the backup was performed for the single PC to the external drive, plug in that drive and configure backup on the PC to use that drive. Run a backup. When it completes, perform a custom restore and select to restore from another PC - the reinstalled PC is a new PC to OneCare, so to access your old backups, you need to use the "other PC" choice.
If your prior backup was a centralized backup for all PCs, you need to first make the PC a hub and then configure backup for the Circle from the hub PC, pointing to the external drive for the backup.
Your mention of the Share name indicates that you are trying to point backup to a network location. Your external Free Agent drive, if connected to the PC via USB is not a network location, but a local external drive. If it *is* a network location, you will need to insure that permissions have been set for the Share and then configure backup to point to the path of the backup drive.
The instructions for restoring files from Help are below. If you need help with the configuration and restore, please contact support.

Restore files from a backup
If your computer goes through a hardware failure or if some of your files are deleted from your computer and you've backed up your files, you can restore the files to your computer from a previous backup. If you're using a hub PC, you can restore backup files from any computer in your OneCare circle. You can choose which files to restore and which backup to restore the files from.
To restore all files from a backup:
To select specific files to restore or to select a specific backup to restore from:
–or–
Restore files that were backed up from another computer.
–or–
Restore files from an earlier backup.
–or–
Restore specific types of files.
–or–
Select the files that you want to restore.
Note
If OneCare detects that there are no appropriate files to restore, you won't receive the Restore files option.
