Best VS 3.5 certification for a beginner RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am beginner is asp.net and would like to take my first certification exam. Please let me know if there is a mandatory beginner's certication for this as per Microsoft, only after which I can move to more advanced ones or I need to analyse my skill set and accordingly choose an exam?

The main reason I am asking this is as per all the threads on all website most suitable exam is 70-536. But after going through the book for the same, I did not find much revelence to the general project work anybody would do. Many of my seniors also did not find it much relevant and had never come across many of the stuff in it in their career.

70-528 is a more relevant exam i feel as it deals directly with all the tools and how to use them.

Please give clear suggestions as to how to go about it as well.

  • Exam 70-528 is for .NET 2.0 web developer. This covers ASP.NET as it was implemented in the .NET Framework 2.0. All of this stuff is also covered in 70-562, but then with some changes/new features that were made to .NET 3.5.

It is not obsolete, as many companies still work with 2.0, but I advise you to take the 3.5 certification path, as it covers everything.

I also agree with Konrad. These exams are not easy. Do not take them lightly. If you choose to use the books for self-study, you will already see that it covers a lot ground. So, prepare well for the exams, and make a lot of example applications for yourself. That way, you might run into some problems, and this way you learn a lot about development, the framework and visual studio.

  • You will start by doing exam 70-536. This exam covers the basics (which is actually .NET 2.0). This exam gives credit toward certification Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Applications .

You can check the preperation materials for 70-536 on the same page. There are classroom trainings, e-learning or books available.

To become ASP.NET 3.5 certified, these are the exams to take:
    70-536 (basics)
70-562  Microsoft Technology Specialist: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Application Development (general ASP.NET 3.5)
70-564 Pro: Designing and Developing ASP.NET Applications Using the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (advanced ASP.NET 3.5)

  • Hi,

the answer of Dmitri wasn't what you was looking for? What information are you missing? He gave you a good path to become a MCPD for web development.

if you are not seeking the informationhe gave you, you should clarify your question! Else we cannot help you any further.

And as Dmitrti said: It covers the basics of .Net 2.0! and that is important. Of course. Some people never used that. I saw people using frameworks like log4net for simply stuff that is build into visual studio already. Yo just the fact that someone is not using a technology does not mean, that it is not required. (I think it is mainly because people comming from java and they start fooling around in .Net without understanding the technology!). So often it is simply because people do not know the technology or they didn't understand it.

But that again prooves how important it is to understand the technlogy completly.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

  • Dmitri's response was very much helpful but I just wanted to wait and see if there are few others who can point at another solution before marking it as answered.

Another query please: at what stage are we supposed to take up 70-528 exam? Cause I am well prepared for it and nobody is talking about it. Is it obselete now?

  • Another addition: Check the http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab2 site. There you see the different exams available.

So maybe you want to go towards the 2010 exams now that they are available, But the books are still missing so it could be hard. But I think I saw some measureup / selftestsoftware offers for these exams already. But I am not sure.

I would not do any Visual Studio 2005 exams. So much was changed and added so that it does not really make sense! Even the 3.5 exams targeting VS2008 have some content that is depricated now (e.g. some Security stuff).

    With kind regards,

    Konrad Neitzel
