My Product Key is invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently bought an HP Pavilion computer and my activation isn't working, when I want to use Microsoft work 2007 it says I need to type the Product Key, but when I do it says it's incorrect. I only have five chances left.  What can I do?

  • Hello Loquilla,

Many major manufacturers such as HP install a Trial copy of Office onto their computers.  Some installed editions are actually a fully licensed copy of Microsoft Works v9 with an associated Trial of a Microsoft Office 2007 edition, such as Office Professional 2007.

Your situation sounds like many others who have posted in the Office section of the forum.  They are mistakenly trying to enter the product key on the Certificate of Authenticity sticker that is located on the computer case or the bottom of a laptop, thinking that this product key is for Office.  The product key on the Windows CoA is for Windows only, it is not supposed to activate Office.

Please refer to this Office Help article for more information about activating a Trial installation of Office, and then later converting the Trial into a perpetually licensed installation of Office:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA101936151033.aspx
