windows ultimate invalidated by simcity!?

Question
-
I installed Simcity 3000 on my pc running vista ultimate upgrade edition (32-bit) a few days ago and when I went in to the building creator program I heard a warning sound from windows. I alt-tab'd back to the desktop and saw a warning dialogue that the aero desktop had stopped working. I later found out that my version of windows is coming up as not validated so I ran the validation process on the microsoft website and that said that my version is not validated possibly because of incompatible programs. I un-installed simcity altogether and re-ran the validation tool. Again it said there was incompatible software so I turned on compatibility settings for all my recent programs even those which were running fine before this started happening and again tried the validation website. Again I was told that my software is not validated. I ran the validation diagnostic tool (v.1.7.0039.0) and it said my copy IS GENUINE but did not tell me what program(s) / Hardware were causing these compatability issues. Furthermore media player won't play any files and other media players I have mysteriously stop working and have to be closed when I try to play any files. What is going on? Why does vista invalidate itself over incompatible software? wouldn't it be easier to warn the user to change the program compatibility settings to earlier versions of windows!?!

The error code reported when I went to validate windows was 0x80070426. I got fed up with vista as I could not use the control panel, view device manager (other than right-clicking on My Computer and selecting manage then going down to device manager) or use any of my media files so I zeroed my HDD and re-installed a clean version which I am currently running. It has validated fine but it says that it cannot activate as it is an upgrade edition of vista and was not upgraded. I'll see if I can get a new product key to get activated. Thanks for the help.

Hi hired goons,
Currently you Vista is showing as Genuine. Alot of times, if a program is conflicting with Vista's software licensing technology, Vista will temporaraly go into a non-genuine state, but will return to a Genuine state once Vista have been rebooted. I beleive this is what is occuring here.
What I request is that when this happens again, don't close any program and don't reboot, but instead, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the "Validate Windows" button. If Vista doesn't Validate (or if another problem), look at the bottom left of the page for a light gray error code (it will look similar to [0xc004c4a8]) record the error code and post the code in this thread. Also, re-run the Diagnostic Report and post that here, as well.
Thank you,
Darin Smith
