Streaming Media on WHS - Update RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago I was asking about hardware requirements to stream media from WHS - in particular HD video content.

Initially I was running WHS on the following hardware:

AMD Sempron 2600+ socket 754 on old Asrock Motherboard

    1gb RAM (400mhz)

    1 x 80gb SATA HDD

    1x 500gb IDE HDD

    1x 500gb SATA HDD

All running in my Antec MATX cube case. Video was stuttery when streaming over my 200Mbps Powerline LAN, and Windows Media Connect ran awfully slowly.

2 weeks ago, I upgraded to the following:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+

    Asus M2NPV-VM MATX Mainboard

1gb DDR2 RAM (2x512mb sticks running dual channel mode)

    1 x 80gb SATA HDD

    1x 500gb IDE HDD

    1x 500gb SATA HDD

All running in my Antec MATX cube case. HD & high bitrate video content now streams beautifully over the LAN, and the media sharing service runs a treat now to my Media Center, whereas before it was running really slowly.

So it certainly looks like you need reasonably new, up to date dual core CPU & dual channel RAM to run WHS in this mode.

    Cheers
