Best forum for asking a question about the Microsoft Public License (MS-PL)? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My question is broadly about what the requirements are for shipping software that is built using code from the Microsoft Public License.

For reference, I'm including my full question below, with the understanding that this forum is not for answering this question, but for determining which forum I should be asking this question in.  Thanks.

Do I need an MS copyright notice when using Silverlight Toolkit (under MS-PL)?

I found a couple bugs in the Silverlight Toolkit. I've fixed them locally, and shared my results on this thread:

    http://forums.silverlight.net/forums/p/145165/355788.aspx

I would like to include my fixes in a shipping product. (To be very clear, we are not going to re-distribute the source code, only compiled binaries with my fixes to the Silverlight toolkit.)
I noticed that the source code for the toolkit is released under the MS-PL. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=131993

After reading section 3C, it is not clear what obligations I am under. Section 3C states:

"(C) If you distribute any portion of the software, you must retain all copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices that are present in the software."

Does this mean that when we ship our product, that we need to include some sort of Microsoft Copyright, patent and or trademark notices? If we were to do so, it would seem to be in conflict with section 3A, which states:

"(A) No Trademark License- This license does not grant you rights to use any contributors' name, logo, or trademarks. "

So, basically, I understand the MS-PL is supposed to be a very open and permissive license, but it is not clear what exactly we need to do, in practice, if we make use of source code under this license.
