Software licensing service/cannot update windows. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I cannot download any Windows updates (or any other updates, it would appear). I was advised to post this here, that this was the appropriate forum. When I try to update Windows Defender, I get the following message: Windows could not start the system Licensing service on Local computer. Error 0xc004e002: 0xc004e002.

The problem appears to be simply that your Software Licensing Service is not running.
The error message above says it all :)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
accept the UAC prompt, and the Services console should appear.
Look down the list for the Software Licensing Service.
right-click on it, and select Properties.
Ensure that the Startup type is set to Automatic, and attempt to start the service
If the service fails to start, make a note of the EXACT error message.
If the service starts, and then almost immediately stops, you may have malware.
if the service starts OK, then reboot the machine - run another MGADiag report, and post the results back here.

OK - this could mean a number of things....

     First run a full
    CHKDSK  C:  /F
You'll have to reboot to let it run - and it may take some time, depending on how much data you have.
Check in the Event viewer once the system has restarted, and see what the chkdsk report has to say. (specifically, and 'bad sectors')

Then, try going to the Validation site, and attempting to Validate Windows... http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate  - it will probably fail  (what error message do you get?) When it does, go to the Diagnostics, and see what they have to say  or advice - follow it, and hopefully you'll be able to get all green ticks. Once you do, try validating again.
    Reboot

Open an Elevated Command prompt window, and type
    SFC   /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key - wait for the scan to finish, and then reboot

Run another MGADiag report, and post back with your results.

This is what I get when I try to Validate Windows:

You said to then go to Diagnostics...where/how? AND I don't know what an "Elevated Comman prompt window is"

    Thanks again,

    Validation Diagnostics....

    Elevated Command Prompt....
    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    CMD
and wait for the search to find what should be the only file - then right-click on the found file, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt if you get one.
Once the window is open, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW
    and hit the Enter key
The scan should start, and take a while depending on the complexity of your system.
Just wait it out, and note any error messages - when it's completed, reboot the machine and attempt validation again.

I have no Idea where that message is coming from, unless you're still failing validation for some reason
    Please post another MGADiag report.
