Validation Fails - Windows 7 reinstall after pc upgrade(retail version) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have recently upgraded my pc, in which a new motherboard has been purchased, and so a format and reinstall is required. Now previously I have purchased a retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate, and it is NOT OEM. So I cannot understand why it should tell me that I am unable to validate on my new build.

Previously When I installed the first time, I had some issues as well, with it complaining about being in the wrong area. I live in South Africa, and most definitaly have a copy that says "Middle East and Africa". That however resolved after a few days. I dont know if the two problems are slightly linked? And if this may resolve in a few days? However, I really need my pc to be working fully and correctly, please let me know if there is anything I can do specifically, de-registering the old version from my previous build maybe? Else please try resolve this issue.

    Regards
    Brad

Windows is not activated.  Click Start and type "activate" then enter your product key if requested.  If activation fails, use phone activation by clicking Start and typing "slui.exe 4".

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
     - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please

    Yep - sorry, it's a generic response.....

OK - there is NOTHING that needs to be edited out of the report - and some of the information there is critical.

At a guess I'd say that your Product Key as shown in the report ends with  TMVMJ-BBMRX-3MBMV  ? If it does, then it's the Default Key, which cannot be activated, and it means that you neglected to insert the proper Key during the reinstall.

Your clock appears to be off - which may cause activation/validation problems (your region is set as South Africa - GMT+2, and the MGADiag is timed as 23:04 on 24th June)

  • The product key I deleted was not those last 3 sets of characters, it was infact the last 3 sets of my actual product key, no mistake there, I checked twice - Unless you are referring to something else? Looking at the report I notice the time there, however my pc time is correct .. Is there maybe a bios time I need to change?

Please let me know if you still need the other information, I still dont feel comfortable pasting the information with my product key on it, however, here is the other information that I was not 100% sure of...

    Activation ID: ac96e1a8-6cc4-4310-a4ff-332ce77fb5b8

Specifically there is nothing more we can really do without the Key and Product ID as shown in the first section - the Product ID because it tells us what type of installation we are dealing with, and the Key because it may be blocked for one reason or another.
Thousands of people have posted their reports in these forums without any problem - as the MGADiag tool states "The data you choose to collect with this tool does not contain any information that can personally identify you....".
The Key cannot be reconstructed from what is visible in the report without access to tools only available inside MS - which are heavily protected and available only to MS staffers.

Check whether your clock shows AM or PM - it's a common mistake. Whereabouts are you, actually? Is your region setting correct? (South Africa)

  • You are overly concerned about someone stealing your key. Take a look around these forums and you will see thousands of these reports. The information you have deleted could be critical to a diagnosis.

Post your full report if you want a solution.

Alright, here is the full report, I shall just have to trust in what you say then :)

Also, my times and location are correct, I am in Johannesburg, South Africa. And the Clock is set to the correct am/pm

As far as I can see, the only problem is that you haven't activated Windows yet.... (and your clock is still off!)
Your Key appears to me to be a valid one (Darin will check using his tools and let us know the exact details.)

  • ok, well if there is a way to "reset" the clock maybe? Because I have adjusted the windows one, and changed it, and it still says that, not sure of what else I can do to fix that. On my task bar, the time and date is correct

Looks like Darin was working from home yesterday so couldn't use his tools.

As far as your clock is concerned, it may be useful to check the actual clock in the BIOS (compare it with your actual local time)

NOTE: DO NOT CHANGE SETTINGS IN THE BIOS - things get permanently broke in there if you're unsure what you're doing!
Reboot your machine and access the BIOS (sometimes called CMOS Setup) - the first page usually contains the raw system time. Make a note of the displayed time, and exit the BIOS without making changes (usually the ESC key)
Boot to Windows - go to Control Panel > Clock Language & Region >
Check that your current location is correct.
Check that your Date is set properly, and that your Time is set correctly - use the Internet Time option to synchronize the clock with the Internet.
    OK out.
Try another MGADiag report, and note the time at which you run it.

Post back with results -  the MGADiag report, and the BIOS time and run time.

  • Ok here are the results, my BIOS time matches my system time, or at least, they are both basically correct.

Once booted back in to windows, and ran the MGADiag, the result in the test now shows the correct time ... please note that windows still will NOT validate

Windows is not activated.  Click Start and type "activate" then enter your product key if requested.  If activation fails, use phone activation by clicking Start and typing "slui.exe 4".

  • I could not see how posting more specific times would have been of any consequence, them being identical should have been enough. However, no worries, the phone activation did work, although I was really hoping to avoid it, as it is often such a hassle.

    Thankyou for your time.

And if there is anything you can do, please get Windows 8 to activate properly, it is not just my copy of Windows that I have known issues with.

Thanks again for your help and time.

Glad to hear that you managed to resolve the problem - what did the Activation Rep ask for?
    Good luck.

(You may not have realised it, but I, like 99% of the others in this forum have no official connection with MS - this is peer-to-peer support, rather than MS support, although there is an MS staffer who attempts to keep things simple, and corrects out more egregious errors<g> [thanks, Darin!])

While people can make a buck out of selling counterfeits, there is no way that Activation is going to get any simpler, whatever we'd like to be the case.  Even if MS was to  drop the price to zero, there would be people attempting to get you to install their own versions of the OS, in order to either 'bot' your machine, or force unwanted apps on it.
Why? because they can either cause confusion, or make money out of it (or both!)

Most activation/validation problems with Win 7 are due to either counterfeiting or malware, rather than faults with the system itself - the better people protect their machines, the less problems of any king they are likely to see.

Some people recommend a reinstall ever few months - I've NEVER reinstalled a system of mine because of a software problem - and the only 'client' system that I've had to reinstall have been because of hardware problems, or software problems that were not economic to solve (and here we are talking serious time, because I don't like to be defeated <g>). some systems have been so badly maintained, or infested with malware, that the only realistic solution is a clean slate,

  • It was actually an automated system, which is a great improvement from 4 years ago when I had to phone then as well. That experience with phoning 4 years ago is why I really did not want to phone this time around.

I also do not format often, and it is always for a reason if I do, last time, when I got Windows 7, this time, motherboard change, etc.

However I am starting to think that my problem might have been my hard drive, as it is starting to give me trouble, unable to find boot manager, or detect the drive, etc. Brand new, a week old, and I have never had a Seagate that did not work well. But this time it looks like I may need to claim on the warranty, which may be more trouble than it is worth.

But hopefully I should not experience difficulties with activation again in the future, especially if MS now have a decent phone activation system.

The system has been pretty good since inception - it only gets bad if you have one that fails the automated system :)

As far as your drive is concerned, check that the connectors are properly seated,  then test the drive with Seagate's HD Test utility. (SeaTools) which you can download from their site.
