Cannot import an CRM2011 organisation twice? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

I've developed a testing plan to minimise our clients downtime in our multi-tennant IFD CRM deployment.

This involved taking a backup from their CRM 4 database, importing it into the 2011 environment, with an altered Org / Database name (essentially adding 'test') to the end.

This would allow me to test and prepare any customisations that need to be upgraded, prior to doing a live upgrade for the client, so they would not be down during this time.

Testing it for the first time now, and CRM 2011 gives me the message that "You've already imported and upgraded this organisation and cannot again"

From what I've read, this is by design.

Is there a way around this to enable me to do what I need to do?

Or do we need a whole other 2011 server setup just for the testing? This would not be ideal.

    Thanks,

  • If it is matching the org ID you may be out of luck but if it is using the name, try test2 instead of test ;) Assuming though that you have already tried changing the name could you remove the first imported org and then try.

  • Hey Leon,

From what I've read it uses the GUID from the MSCRM 4 organisation, which is causing the issue.

Yep, that's exactly what I've tested. Restore an org SQL DB as <OrganisationName>_Test - and then import it as <OrganisationName>Test - I can then test things such as JavaScript etc., without having to stop the client from using their CRM4 deployment. Once that testing is completed I would know the steps needed to do the proper upgrade.

When you say 'remove the first imported org' - what do you mean? I have tried deleting the SQL DB and diabling the org in deployment manager.

The only thing I can think of is that it keeps the information in the MSCRM_CONFIG database of organisations you have imported. It seems maybe this is the only way around it, which is unsupported obviously.

Seems strange as now I'll need to setup another server for testing...

Anybody else have a suggestion how I can essentially delete any information about the upgraded org in deployment manager enabling me to import the CRM 4 DB more than once?

    Thanks,

    George

  • Hack the org guid in the sql backend? Verry unsupported but it may work.

  • You can have a look at this article by Richard Knudson to see if it helps.

  • Thanks Donna (and Richard :) )

This article outlined the process I was undertaking, however I was under the impression that you couldn't delete an organisation from Deployment Manager, after a bit of rumaging around I found my user account didn't have that privledge, so logged into the machine as administrator, and deleted the organisation. I could then re-import the other CRM 4 DB.

    Great!

    Thanks.
