office small business edition 2003 valid but office xp small business and publisher 2003 must be validated? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Sirs:

Until today I have never seen a message regarding some of my Office software needing to be activated. When I run ANY of the office applications and goto "help" and "activate" they all come back with "already activated." This makes no sense...

The message I get from the genuine advantage tool follows, where "Office Small Business Edition 2003" is valid and active but "Office XP Small Business" and "Publisher 2003" must be activated. Again, any office application I attempt to validate (Word, Publisher, Visio, etc.) all say they ARE validated, so what gives?

I've included the messages from the validation tool and the output from your diagnostic tool (at the end).

And additional note, this machine was built (several years ago) by performing a "relocation" from an old machine to the new machine, by transferring from the old machine to the new using PC Relocator. In the process, I neglected to stop the transfer of Office from the old to the new. I did, however, uninstall Office from the old so the new could be activated. However, this new machine came with a copy of Office from Dell, which probably never was activated, so the message is probably coming from the OEM installed copy of Office that was probably never activated.

Thus, the question becomes, how does one tell the genuine advantage to ignore this extra non-active license on the machine?

    Regards,

    Paul Fischer

  • XMN Boy,

I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing surrounding Office activation. In turn I would like to provide the following steps to try and resolve the issue. Please follow the steps to attempt resolving this issue.  Open My Computer located on your desktop

    1.      Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\

NOTE:  The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow:  Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.

    2.      Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.

    3.      This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)

    4.      Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.

    5.      If product activation was successful try the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Please launch the following link and begin the OGA process again: (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng
