Moving certain parts of old computer to new computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a 3 yr old laptop which has been used by 3 different people, and recently purchased a new laptop.  I want to use the latest One Care backup from the old laptop to transfer files to the new laptop - but only MY OWN stuff.  I don't want to move the data under the other two users.  What would be the best way to do this?

  • You have two choices.
    1. A custom restore, selecting file by file what you want to restore. That would be painful and tedious.
    2. A full restore, custom. If the new PC has the same User profile for you, but does not have the profiles for the other users, the files for the other users will be restored to a OneCare restore folder along with any conflicts that restore encountered. You can then choose to delete all files from the restore folder.

I would use the 2nd option.

Edit: I should mention that I would use the 2nd option only if a OneCare restore was my only choice. My preference would be to manually transfer the data I wanted over the network with the old and new laptop connected to the same LAN with ethernet cabling. It would be faster and I would be certain to get the files I wanted over to the new PC.
