Larger to smaller restore PP3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Did PP3 fix the restore to a smaller HD issue?  I have a 160gb WD that has  44gb data on and want to swap to a 74gb raptor.  I know that I can use Acronis to do this but WHS is so much easier.

  • As a workaround, first shrink the partition to less than 74 GB and back up using WHS. Then restore to the 74 GB disk.

  • No. The "bare metal" restore still requires a disk that's the same size or larger as a practical matter. There are conditions where a smaller disk can be used, but they're somewhat rare and they'll really never allow a disk less than half the original size, really.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
