Windows Activation Error 0x80070426 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've been trying to run Windows Update on my Mother's laptop today but have been met with Error 0x80070426 and upon investigation found out that Windows is no longer activated.

I have been onto http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate (using IE) and gotten the response: Windows validation was interrupted. Unable to determine whether Windows is genuine.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

  • You have a major hardware problem.

Your Hard Drive is failing, and you should back up all data to external media NOW before it gets worse, or fails altogether.

I'd think seriously about a clean install on a new HD, rather than attempting to fix this one.

  • Your problem appears to be that the Software Licensing Service is not running. and it must, if Vista is not to complain.

Have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner??

First check that the Service is set to start Automatically –

    Click on Start,

     in the Search box, type

    SERVICES.MSC

    and hit the Enter key.

Accept the UAC prompt, then look in the listing for the Software Licensing Service – right-click on it and select Properties.

Make sure that it’s set to Automatic, and click Apply

Once that’s properly set, Start the service – how long before it appears to stop again? Is there anything in the Event Viewer to indicate why it stopped? – is there an error message?

Please run the following commands in an Elevated (Admin) Command Prompt Window, and post the results.

    net start slsvc

    sc qc slsvc

    sc queryex slsvc

    sc qprivs slsvc

    sc qsidtype slsvc

    sc sdshow slsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • The only program used often with a registry cleaner is Ccleaner, however the actual registry cleaner part is rarely if ever used.

The Software Licensing Service is already set to Automatic. Once the service is started it seems to happily sit there running for however long you want, however as soon as you try to activate windows it immediately stops.

  • You appear to have run those commands in a normal Command Prompt - please run the last one again, and an Admin (see my instructions, above)

Your problem is an unusual one....

    Please open Event Viewer

In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs

right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx

repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx

Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

  • Umm, having UAC turned off means you cant access ECP properly? Because i had UAC off and still run CP as admin and it come up as Administrator: Command Prompt when i run the commands the first time. Anyway, turned UAC on and run the commands again.

  • Turning off UAC breaks a number of things in the OS - that's one reason why it's not a good idea ;)

I get a 'file does not exist any more' error from your link Try using SkyDrive instead - or DropBox

  • I am aware that the hard drive is failing. The laptop actually is just a backup laptop now and is no longer used for anything important as i got my mother to replace it rather then seeking to get it repaired as it is 6 year old at least and was never a very good laptop to begin with.

The main use for the laptop now is just to show my mother's clients their records (she is an accountant) because she doesn't want her new laptop to get damaged. Other then that its just used for browsing and writing some non-essential documents which are later transferred to her new laptop or PC.

If you feel it is too much of a waste of your time then thank you for your assistance and sorry for wasting your time. :)

  • I like a challenge! :)

I was more concerned about your time, and the potential for disaster.

The CHKDSK you ran on 22nd showed 84KB in bad sectors - but today's System log shows a large number of bad sectors, which means that the disk is failing fast, rather than slow (another CHKDSK /R will probably show over 100KB in bad sectors, if I'm reading it right)

Once a disk gets that bad you're probably talking days, rather than months, before it either fails completely or starts losing important OS files.
