  • I have exactly the same problem. synctoy worked well for more than a year and suddenly gives this problem.

  • I had this problem and running the synctoy repair or a reinstall did not work.

I fixed it by doing the following (Window7):

    Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17439

Download: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (SQLServerCE31-EN.msi)

Go to: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features (add remove programs)

Repair: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (using the downloaded SQLServerCE31-EN.msi file)

Repair: Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Core Compnents

Repair: Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Provider Services

    Now fixed..

  • I don't think it's a surprise that to me this has happened after a automatic Windows Update that required a restart.  Thanks for nothing yet again!

  • Thanks for the fix, it worked well thought I was not sure if the download was required as I didn't get a prompt when repairing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (using the downloaded SQLServerCE31-EN.msi file) to select the downloaded file.

    Cheers.

  • I am running XP and there are 2 modules in MS Sync Framework 2.0 that need to be repaired (and obviously a 3rd in Win7):

    Provider Services

    Core Components

Compact Edition (W7...?) To repair them, you need 3 files which can be downloaded from this link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=18241

    ProviderServices-v2.0-x86-ENU.msi

    Synchronization-v2.0-x86-ENU.msi

    SQLServerCE31-EN.msi

You will be prompted for the path on your machine during the repair process, so to simplify matters, you could make them 'easily accessible'. Thanks to Crag0928 and Yughead for this info; that is rather obscure stuff for the "ordinary" MS user... Whoever found these things deserves a pat on the back... jollie fine showe, old chap. Although it begs the question of how the Framework became suddenly corrupted, and needed repairing.

  • One of the files (SQLServerCE31-EN.msi) is not in that link; you have to use Crag's link above to download it:

Funny thing... I just happen to uninstall Kies the other day, and SyncToy has stopped working. Didn't think of that....

Anyway- Crag0928's solution (to repair all three) worked for me.
    Thanks.

  • Had the same problem "Failed to create the provider", and repairing  the Sync Framework works ok.

For me the problem was caused when i installed Samsung Kies which messed with the Sync Framework.

No need to uninstall Kies, just repair Sync Framework

    Sunday, September 22, 2013 12:20 PM
  • Samsung Kies did the same to me..

"repaired" after downloading the appropriate files for XP SP3.

    Synctoy works again.

    thanks all.
