Control Auto shut-down (VISTA Home)

Question

My computer automatically shuts down after Windows updates. This is a disaster when you are working on something important, and it gets lost. There is no warning so that you can save and close the program you are in. How can I control when it re-boots after updates? Thanks. Bobijmac

When doing Windows Updates, your Vista computer will only reboot itself if it needs to, for example because of an important security update which requires a reboot.
This is by design, otherwise why bother installing updates for critical issues?
The only way around this would be to change your Windows Update settings to advise you that there is an update so that you can choose a convenient time to install (and reboot) where necessary.

That depends on your operating system.
For WHS, go to the Console, click Settings and change the updates in there. For Vista go to Control Panel, Security, Windows Updates, Change Settings, and choose Download updates and let me choose whether to install them (or whatever option you want to use)

Exactly! That is my point. How do I control when it updates and reboots? Thanks

Sorry, Im not sure what you are asking, I already said that you can change your settings to notify and perform them when you want.
When the updates are finished it will reboot (if required) - that is what it is supposed to do. You cannot change that if the patch requires and immediate reboot.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. When I got there I discovered that I had already set the updates to occur at 3AM. I'm not sure why it's suddenly shutting me down after updates during the day. Hmmmm. But thank you for your help!!!
