Vail RC: PC client restore CD does not find backup system images RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I am experimenting with the WHS Vail RC restore utility CD.  I have configured and created a backup set for my client computer consisting of the SYSTEM and OS of my client PC.  The backup runs successfully and creates files in a share called \\squid\client computer backups (However, I don’t know if these are the system image)

Next I attempt a restore as follows:

    1.    Boot the PC Client from the Vail RC client restore utility (CD version).

    2.    Select the option to repair an existing installation.   The utility initially does not find a system restore image so I proceed to NEXT

    3.    Press Refresh:  The restore utility finds a system restore image that was created by my PC client and stored locally on an external drive (This image was not created by WHS backup)

    4.    Press Advanced:  Have an opportunity to (1) install drivers or (2) Search the network – I select search the network

    5.    The restore utility asks for a network share where the system image resides.  I enter: “\\squid\client computer backups” or "\\squid".  In either case, the restore utility requests my credentials.  I provide the login credentials for the WHS Administrator Account.
       a.    If I chose "\\squid" as the share nothing is found.
       b.    If I chose "\\squid\client computer backups" nothing is found.
       c.    If, prior to searching, I copy the system image that was created by my PC to the   "\\squid\client computer backups" share, the restore facility finds that system image.

The fact that the restore utility can find a system image that I placed in a WHS share establishes that it is able to connect and search shares on my WHS.

The questions I think I need to figure out answers for are:
Does the WHS backup utility create a valid system image or must this be created separately by the PC client?  and if it does, where is the system image located and how do I identify it? (This will help me verify that my WHS system is creating a system image for the backed up clients)

    Any help would be appreciated.

I don't recall an option to repair an existing installation with the restore cd.  I think you may be booting from the install cd.  The first option you should see is whether you want to restore an x86, or x64 bit computer.

  • Thanks All,

DW spotted my problem.  I accidentally burned the wrong CD and didn't have enough experience to recognize the problem from the dialogs.  I responded and marked the problem as solve but apparently my reply got lost.

  • "I don't recall an option to repair an existing installation with the restore cd"

I'll be right back, going to restore from a CD and get the variables.

  • Put in the Restore CD I am running this on Win7 x64 Ultimate SP1

    • When it boots up press key to boot from CD
    • Choose x86/x64
    • "Windows is loading files"
    • "Starting Windows"
    • Initializing the Restore Media
    • Full System Restore Wizard
Choose Region and Keyboard Settings(English) - Continue
    • "Welcome to the Full Restore Wizard" - Continue, this is where you can load drivers but I don't need to.
    • "Full System Restore Wizard" - Continue
    • "Finding Your Server"
    • Display asking for WHS password
    • Choose computer, if there is more than one available on your network
    • Choose backup
This is how it works for me and has on all testing I have done, never fails or hasn't yet. I choose the date I want to restore from and off it goes.

  • The method you were using was for a Server Restore. If you are backing up the Server to an external USB drive that is the system image it was looking for.
