Slow server restore? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tested to do a restore of the OS partition (60GB) and it took almost three hours. Should it take so long time?

  • Hi,

For an initial backup (when all data on the 60GB partition has to be send to your server) three hours is about the time to expect for a 100MBit/sec network connection.
    With an avarage transfer speed of about 50 Mbits/sec the system can transfer about 54 GBytes in three hours (5 Mbytes/sec * 60 * 60 * 3).

Once the system is backed up, subsequent backups will only need to send data changes to the server.
So your day-to-day backups should complte much faster.

  • Hi,

Sorry for the short description earlier!

    My Hardware

    HP Microserver N36L, 5GB RAM

    DVD player

250GB hard drive for OS (60GB) OS partition)

    2TB harddrive for ServerFolders

2TB hard drive for backup of the server

My test whas to do a restore of the OS partition of the WHS2011.

So I booted the server from the Installation CD.

And selected "Restore your computer from a system image you created earlier".

The restore of the OS partition (60GB) took almost three hours.

Should it take so long time?

Why would you assume he is restoring over a 100mb connection.  This is a SERVER restore and most like it is disk to disk.  THIS PROCESS IS HORRENDOUSLY SLOW.  His time is typical to my own experience.

My post documents the same issue.
