Requirements to access Mobile Express
You must have an Internet or intranet connection to use Mobile Express; you can access it in two ways:
- From your mobile Web browser, go to the URL for Mobile Express. Typically this is https://<CRM_server>/m where <CRM_server> is the name of the server you use to access CRM. Your system administrator will have the appropriate URL.
- From your mobile Web browser, go to http://crm.dynamics.com and log in.

To add on what Carsten posted - with a mobile device you should be able to browse to the normal CRM url and it should detect your browser type and automatically display the mobile forms.
In order to access it from outside your firewall you would need to have the IFD configured, mobile access would be the same as standard web client access.

I've never set up a VPN from a true mobile device, but once you have the VPN connection established you should be able to access the CRM URL with the "/m" appened and the mobile views should be displayed after you authenticate.

Is it possible to use a VPN connection, rather than going through the pains of IFD?
Thanks,
Ricardo
PS: Same question for the upcoming iPad client for On-premise CRM?

The reason I asked is that during this week's training on Dynamics CRM Service Update Dec. 2012, IFD was presented as a prerequisite to the new iPad client. But I tend to concur to your opinion that IFD is not required if the mobile device can establish a VPN connection.
Thanks James!
Ricardo.
