Windows Vista Ultimate - Product Key not working

    Question

  • i have a Dell from 2008 with OEM Windows Vista Ultimate.  All of a sudden, last night Windows is saying it's not genuine.  When I enter the product key from my COA, I'm told it's already in use.  When I call the automated activation line it's telling me the confirmation id is not valid for the installation id.  Reentered it many times so no typos.

When I enter the product key after the 2nd reboot I get the following message:

The product key you typed is already in use.

The following errors also appear in event viewer.

Registration of PidConfiguration data failed. hr=0xC004E016, OOB License Id=320084ac-0bda-4054-9bfa-574ae4ba00b9.

The problem appears to be with the Trusted Store still.

I suspect that your best options are.....
    1) attempt support from MS through WGA support
    2) support through the Malware support from MS (sorry - I don't have a link for it - and it may not be free)
    3) go to a specialist malware support site, such as www.bleepingcomputer.com for assistance - I am fairly certain that you have a deep malware infestation.

    4) a reinstall.

You have a Trusted Store Tamper
Make sure that your AV is up to date, and run a full system scan from every account on the machine.
download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free edition (www.malwarebytes.org) – update it and run a full system scan in your main account, and quick scans in every other account.

    Then post another MGADiag report.

  • Ok I'll begin that now.  Btw just so you are aware of everything.  I've been running a dual boot since Windows 7 came out.  The other partition is Win 7 Pro retail.  No activation problems there for now.  Both are running NIS with latest updates.

Last time I was in Vista was March 9 and then booted into Win 7.  Booted back into Vista for 1st time yesterday to install the latest patches from Tuesday and that's when the message came up after entering my password.

Will post a new report after the scans.

There’s a good chance that it’s a race condition, rather than a real problem – give the install a few minutes to settle down after the mass of updates, and reboot to it. You may well find that the notification disappears.

  • Scans are still running.  Just to clarify.  The notification came up as soon as I first booted back into Vista.  Before I had a chance to install the patches.  It was between 11 and midnight.  Can't remember the exact time but pretty close to the time stamp.

  • NIS scan was clean.  MBAB is currently running.

For curiosity I went into the Event Viewer and the timestamp in the report indeed matches when I booted back into Vista for the first time last night.  It starts an hour earlier until it gets the DLS time info from syncing with the time server and then jumps to the correct time.

SLS started at 11:54.56 sucessfully then at .57 the first error was reported.

Key Management Service (KMS) failed to start.

    Info:

    hr=0xC004D301

That's followed by a number of warnings and errors related to SLS.  Is that info useful to you?

At least the Trusted Store Tamper timestamp hasn’t been updated, which is a good sign.
Unfortunately, nothing else has changed, either.
Please run  CHKDSK and SFC scans -
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • ok Carey.

Btw, as I had mentioned before, the last time I logged out of Vista before this problem began was on March 9.  On March 3, I updated the drivers for my Nvidia card.If that messed something up would it have caused the activation to become invalid on the next boot or can it take a few days?

Let's try the manual version of the Fixit - we may see a little more detail from it.
make a note of the EXACT wording of any error messages received, and post them together with the final results.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker, on the machine’s case.

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results

Carey - the OP is now using a COA_SLP Key - which has NO possible bearing on the SLIC table that your are yet again attempting to correct by the wrong method.

  • Noel, I'm on hold for support now.

Quick question.  I was looking at the event log for when I logged off the last time Vista still says it was genuine on the 9th.  This is the last entry:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

Am I wrong in assuming those registry keys deal with the Trusted Store?  If something got screwed up in those keys while logging off Windows could that explain why the net boot on the 16th reported the store tamper?  Does that give you any direction on how to fix it outside of a reinstall?

That entry is nothing to do with the problem you have - it's simply Windows Live services being a little laggardly in their exit., and is common.

  • Thanks.  Well the support tech tried a bunch of things but none of them worked.  Not even a new produict key.  So I'm going to have to reinstall.

Thank you for all you help.

  • OUCH!

You may be able to get away with a Repair Install - see here for details.

This will at least retain your data and programs

The source for these is DigitalRiver - MS's download partner - and they are approved downloads.

I know of no reputable site that has links for SP2.

  • Would it be possible to slipsteam SP2 into the SP1 download you provided?  Do have a link to good instructions to accomplish that task?

  • Going to work on this over the weekend.  Will let you know what happens.

Btw, when the Microsoft techs couldn't fix the problem they offered some nice compensation without me even asking.  So kudos to MS for that.

  • The repair install completed but it did not fix the problem.  So I did a clean install.  It's now working again.  Thanks again for all of your assistance.
