MS will not accept correct XP Pro Product Key

Question
-
Short verson. Company laptop Tecra A9 running XP Pro. Employee is terminated. He (mistakenly) deletes some system files while trying to wipe sensitive data. Laptop won't boot. Original recovery disks cannot be found. I took laptop to local techie and asked him to reinstall XP Pro SP3. I showed him the sticker on the laptop with the Key. I later picked up the laptop and installed the Toshiba drivers. I then attempt to update the XP Pro with Windows update. Part of that process involves the authentication process.
The local geek had entered a product key other than the one on the sticker on the computer. It is a volumn key and not valid. So, I try to Register the software and change the Product Key. I entered the product key from the sticker on the laptop. The Windows system rejects it. I did the telephone validation; it rejected me, too! I retried twice more, same result.
I seem stuck. I have a legitmately licensed laptop for XP Pro. I can't validate the key. What to do?
Thanks for your help.

You'll have to take it up with local techie. The sticker is for oem activation and is why it does not work. May need to ask oem provider for replacement installation media.
