WHS PP3 Help. How do I backup/copy data (music) to an external HDD RRS feed

  • Question

  • Appologies for being thick, but cant find how to do this anywhere.

I have an Acer Aspire Easystore H340 running WHS PP3 which I us to store my music in FLAC and MP3.

I would like to copy or backup the music files to an external HDD (Lacie rugged XL) via the Easystores ESATA port for offsite backup.

I am not sure where to start. I tried dragging the files on the Windows7 PC I use to access the WHS but it wouldnt work (it dispalys a no entry sign). I would like to transfer the data directly from the WHS machine to the external HDD, do I need to get a command prompt and use DOS commands ? and to get a command prompt do I need to install the 'Advanced Admin Console' addin ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Not thick, but I don't think you can do what you want to do because of Drive Extender - no drive letters allocated to disks not part of the pool. Easiest way would be to connect your external drive to your client PC and copy from your server shared folders to there.

  • You can connect the drive to the server, add it as a backup drive, and then back up your music share to the drive. There's no other supported method of backing up to an external drive.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
