Vista Build 6002 problem - cannot run MCADiag tool!

    Question

  • Hi there - my laptop is showing the Vista Build 6002 - this copy of Windows is not genuine - error.    I have tried to run the MGA Diagnostic tool as recommended on here, but get an error message saying it cannot download. I cannot read the product key on the bottom of the laptop as it is so worn (it is a Toshiba Satellite L300 - about 2 years old).

I have recently had problems whereby automatic updates wouldn't update - they start updating but then the message come up about reverting to original settings - have no idea if this is connected in any way.

Any help or suggestions appreciated - have no idea what to do and don't want to lose all my university work!

    Remove everything it finds.

  • Ok - I did download Malware and did the quick scan which didn't find anything. Will go back into Normal mode and do a full scan and see what happens.

  • This sounds like it may be malware -

try downloading the MGADiag tool while in Safe Mode with Networking - then reboot to Normal Mode, and run it.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
     - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please

Also - while in Safe Mode with Networking - download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org ) and install and update it (un a Full scan once back in Normal Mode, and delete everything it finds.

The problem here is that the Software Licensing Service is not running.
    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
and hit the Enter key - accept the UAC prompt if you get one.
Look in the console for the Software Protection service, right-click on it and select Properties.
make sure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Apply.

Try starting the service now - do you get an error message? Does it start? does it almost immediately stop again?
Post back with your results, and a new MGADiag report.

Sorry – my fault – I picked up a wrong ‘boilerplate’ response.
    Automatic is fine for Vista

here’s what it should have read.

    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt that comes up
In the listing of Services, find the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
right-click on it, and select Properties.
make sure that the service Startup type is set to Automatic - click Apply if you've had to change anything.

    Then try starting the service.
    What is the result?

If you get an error message, please report back with the EXACT details.

If it succeeds, reboot - run an new MGADiag report, and post it back here
