What exam to choose ? ( server 2008 R2 or server 2012 ) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all.

I'm currently thinking of getting certificate but can't choose it.

At work I'm using windows server 2008 R2 and windows 7/8, but as I know we will not upgrade to server 2012 in visible future.

So I decided to get 70-640/642 exams but as I read they not *valid* or something like that, do I need to try get them or better to go for server 2012 exams ? I'm got feeling that pass 70-640/642 exams will be easier because I work with server 2008 r2 or working experience doesn't matter much ? So I can go and get books/video/virtual machines and pass exam for server 2012 ?

What exam best to pick for first to pass ?

    Thx for advice :)

  • If you want Server 2008 certification first then going for MCSA: Server 2008 is fine and you can upgrade to Server 2012 later. Do what fits with your needs and your company's needs best. It is a personal choice, some decide to go straight for MCSA: Server 2012 as this requires also 3 exams and no upgrade exam so this path is shorter then MCSA 2008+Upgrade exam.

  • Hi,

The Server 2012 exams and certification will remain valid for longer and at some point the majority of company's will replace Server 2008 R2 with Server 2012

You can purchase MS Press self-paced study books to learn for the exam. Vendors like CBT Nuggets and Trainsignal have video recorded trainings available. For Virtual Machines you can use the Windows Server 2012 trial versions with Hyper-V or something like VirtualBox or VMWare Player/workstation,

There is also the possibility to go for MSCA: Server 2008 first (3 exams) and then upgrade to MCSA: Server 2012 with exam 70-417 (MCSA: Server 2012 is also 3 exams if you do not ugrade)
