Change recommended blue plus sign with required red asterisk image

  I would like to simulate required fields for fields that are recommended. I've written the javascript to do field validation, but I'd also like to show the red asterisk instead of the blue plus sign. Reason for this is that I would like to convert an opportunity to a custom entity. This entity has a lot of required fields which I don't know the values of. By using a plugin/workflow I could create the custom entity when the opportunity is won, send the url to the new record in can e-mail so that the recipient can fill in the remaining data.
  
  I don't know if it would be easier to not have an image at all, but should be easy to accomodate.
  
  Any tips?
