Insane Windows Vista Activation issues. Extremely aggravating! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I recently reinstalled my copy of Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 on my Acer Aspire 4730Z laptop. I entered the key during installation, and when I tried to activate it, I got the following error:

    Error Code 0xC004E003

The software licensing service reported that license evaluation failed.

I Googled the error which led me to this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931276

I followed the steps to no avail.

Nowhere does it give me the option to activate over the phone. I even uninstalled the key and forced limited functionality mode, and all it gives me is a window that says "The Windows Vista(tm) Home premium Product key you entered is invalid for activation" and three choices:

"Buy a new product key online."

"Type a different product key." (Tried this multiple times. Same result - it'll still try to activate over the web even when I disable all internet connections!)

"Contact Microsoft to help Resolve this problem."

None of which are useful. I browsed these forums a bit and came across the MGA tool, whose results I've pasted below. Any help? This is driving me INSANE!!!!

It appears that for some reason your machine is unable to read the SLIC table in the BIOS to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key that is in use This Key cannot be activate either by phone or over the Internet.
You need to change the Product Key to the one on your COA Sticker, using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System Properties page - you will then probably have to activate by phone

Nah - every one is a little different :)

  • Okay - sorry guys. I didn't get notifications that there were responses to this thread even though I subscribed to it. How irritating!!!

So this issue is still not solved. The key I'm using IS the key from the COA sticker - or at least I'm fairly sure it is. Irritiatingly enough the COA sticker rubbed off and now the key is unreadable. I used a program to extract the key from the OEM install of windows - the one that shipped with it from the factory. Would this be different?

Yes - the Key that ships from the factory is the OEM's master Key, the OEM_SLP Key. Your own Key is on the COA sticker on the machine's case.

  • So what happens if the key on the sticker is rubbed off? how do I get it? :|

Edit for clarification: the sticker itself hasn't rubbed off - the sticker is there. the key is unreadable due to wear on the sticker.

    Unfortunately all too common.  :(
    First try the following.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes - don't worry if it tells you the service isn't running anyhow!))
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

     Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

If that fails, then you'll probably have to do a complete System Recovery, as no-one has a record of which Key was issued to which computer.

Yes, you would - it seems that for whatever reason, the machine is not reading the Certificates that should be present to self-activate with the SLIC table in the BIOS. This could well mean that it's been reinstalled using a disk other than the manufacturer's.

You need to contact the manufacturer and order a set of Recovery disks for your machine. Your only other legitimate alternative is to purchase a new Retail copy of Windows.
