I purchased office 2003 online at ebay, validates and passes OGA but isnt really valid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I recently purchased Office 2003 from a seller on ebay and it apears I have been duped. It has a hologram CD and a Certificate of authenticity, but there are some problems. The certificate doesnt actually have an interwovan ribbon and the microsoft symbol on the hologram doesnt change to genuine, upon closer inspection, the CD key I entered when I first started set up isnt actually being used by office and is actually a VLK posted all over the internet, so its using some sort of script to change that. I verifed this with rockxp. I filed a piracy report a week ago and havent heard anything, I also tried to resolve this over live chat but I dont think the person on the other end understood my problem and disconnected before I got finished. Should I continue to wait for microsoft to reply or resubmit my report. the seller has already offered a refund. Should I just return it? I would like to take advantage of the office genuine advantage kit.

    Thanks Matt

  • Hello mattbeau,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->

    Office Status: 100 Genuine

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 100 Genuine

    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0

    Signed By: Microsoft

    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

    ><Product GUID="{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}"><LegitResult>100</LegitResult><Name>Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003</Name><Ver>11</Ver><Val>86D917FC1F81500</Val><Hash>cPHlnVJpXknsDw1NmgUILMAsbog=</Hash><Pid>73931-640-4339835-57976</Pid><PidType>14</PidType

Your virtual computer currently has a Volume Licensing installation of Office Professional 2003 installed, but unfortunately for Genuine Advantage purposes, the product key used to install it is still reporting as a genuine Volume Licensing product key.  The organization that holds the Volume Licensing agreement under which the installed product key was issued apparently is not aware, or not concerned, that their Volume Licensing Key has been released "to the wild," and because it is not yet blocked, apparently it has not been abused to the point where it would attract attention on the Microsoft Activation "radar screens."

This is an unfortunate "Catch-22" situation:  as far as the Microsoft Office Genuine Advantage system is concerned, your installation of Office is Genuine because the product key is genuine.  And because the system classifies this installation as Genuine, you are not presented with a course of action that would allow you to either participate in the Office Genuine Offer to purchase a modestly discounted genuine copy of Office, not allow you to submit the high-quality counterfeit materials for consideration for complimentary replacement under the Complimentary Office Offer.

    So what should you do?

Plan A:  You can continue to monitor the situation, running Office Validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine every other week or so, waiting and watching for the day if and when this installation is declared blocked due to its abuse becoming evident.  At such time you would be shown the resolution screens that would lead to either the Office Genuine Offer or the Office Complimentary Offer.

Plan B:  Or, you can deliberately change the installed product key to a known nongenuine product key.  Here is the MS KB that tells you how to change an Office product key:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456/en-us  You can change the product key to the one that you wrote was the VLK posted all over the internet (if it's the one I'm thinking of, it ends in 3HFDY).  Restart then visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Office, and once it fails validation you'll see the resolution screens as described above.

Let us know how it works out :-)

  • Hello mattbeau,

If you've installed the suspect Office, please do this:

In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Run" several times to download and start the Utility.  When asked, click the "Continue" button.  When the utility completes its run, click the "Copy" button, then come back here and paste the report into your post.

If you have not installed the suspect Office, IMHO it would be best not to (due to the risk of embedded malware) and just send it back to the seller for a refund.

  • Hello mattbeau,

Once you change the product key, restart and try to activate.  The danger with using widely pirated keys is that you could pick one that is so abused that it is flagged by the activation servers and won't activate.

If you can activate, then rerun the mgadiag and look for the Office status to be either 103 Blocked or 108 Invalid.  Once you get either, then a trip to www.microsoft.com/genuine should result in failed validation and should then lead you to the Genuine Offer screens.
