WHS Connector installation Error RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Hi, I was hoping somebody could help me with a problem I have been having with my WHS installation.

I installed the RTM version into a  VPC for testing purposes before I do a real installation.

I created a new VHD 80GB into which I then installed the WHS. It installed perfectly except for the "this program is already running" popup during installation and the problem with configuration wizard which pops up every time saying:

"An error occurred in Windows Home Server Setup

Windows Home Server Setup encountered an error. Click back to retry. Or click Next to close the setup wizard and run setup again. To restart the setup wizard, reboot your home server."

I configured the password, router and the web page manually (from the WHS console) and except for the UPNP all seems to be working fine (my router does not support UPNP, but I configured the router manually).

I am still getting the wizard window saying the same thing all the time after rebooting.

I also assigned a fixed IP address to the WHS.

I am not sure I configured the server correctly and that I have covered all things necessary but I went on to the connector installation.

I have a VPC Windows XP professional computer in the same workgroup as the WHS. I access the connector installation thru the WHS Software share. I start the installation and it seems to be working fine, I can see the client computer in the WHS console (and it is active). I take it that the client was able to find and connect to the WHS and add the computer. The connector installation then initiates the server discovery and in this step I get:

An unknown network error has occurred.

Please verify that your network connection is active and that your windows home server is powered on. Then restart this wizard.

Because I do not have a DNS server I modified the client computers Hosts file like this:

    192.168.0.50      WHServer

I have tried the troubleshooting guide already (dialed all the sites and got correct answers) to be sure that I do not have a firewall problem, nslookup is not working due to no internal DNS being presen, but I did modify the Hosts file (not sure if this is sufficient). Before I go buy a UPNP router I would like to know if it would solve the problem I am facing (I do not believe so).

The Discovery log displays the following:

I have tryed pretty much everything at this point.

Could somebody help me out with this as I am already loosing my mind over it.

I am not sure if the problems are coming from the Virtual environment or from my netwrok config.

    Best regards

  • While some users have successfully maintained Windows Home Server in a virtual environment, it is not supported. Do you have netbios running in your virtual environment? Have you attempted to log in to the home server and launch the console "locally" to complete OOBE mode setup?

  • Tomaz, in addition to what Marc has said, I can tell you that until you complete the OOBE setup, you will not be able to join any computers to your WHS. I would suggest you try reinstalling WHS.

Are you using Microsoft Virtual PC for your virtualization technology, or VMWare? I use Virtual PC, and while it's not aupported, I've never had a problem.

  • Well, if you can find a computer in your basement that meets the minimum hardware requirements, that would be one way to go. But I've never had trouble installing in Virtual PC 2007. I give it 512 MB of RAM, an 80 GB virtual disk, and capture the DVD. Reboot and let it install.

I would give VPC another try... You should not attempt to interrupt the install at any point, BTW. Doing so may cause problems. After the initial graphical setup phase, where you're answering questions, just let setup run until you see the Welcome screen.

  • It shouldn't be the router that's causing your problem.

As for not even moving focus, when I set up a new VM (about once a month; I never activate a VM since I'm only using them for testing) I just leave it running in the background and continue with whatever else I might be doing. I never use more than a minimum sized disk, either.

  • Hi,

First of all thanx for answering after all this time Smile

I am using Virtual PC from MS... I have already tried reinstalling it...

I would love to finish the OOBE setup, but unfortunatelly it is not letting me do it Smile Any suggestins on how to overcome the problem with the wizard ?

I think I am going to pull out one of the old computers I have stacked up in the basement and install the WHS there. I hope that will work then.

    Cheers

  • Good idea. Re: your virtual environment, instead of specifying an 80GB virtual hard disk for your installation, try using a 120GB hard disk - I think you should attempt to get a clean installation before attempting to troubleshoot one that didn't go very smoothly.

  • Thanx for staying on this Smile

I will try reinstalling to the VPC again, since I am not sure that I have a spare computer with minimum specs...

The thing is that I have already tried doing it once and the OOBE wizard crapped with the error I described above.

I will assign 120GB to the image and do as you said - will not interrupt the setup in any way - not even remove focus from the VPC console window durng installation - maybe this will help.

I was suspecting it might have something to do with me not having a UPNP router (I just bought one now).

I will give it another and report back Smile

    cheers

  • I am having this same issue in a non-virtualized setting. Has anyone, including the OP come up with a solution?

  • Hi,

Thank you all for coming back with all the answers.

I reinstalled the whole VM as you proposed and it is working like a charm now Smile

    Best regards and thanx again.
